Our comprehensive exam is a four part tour of your mouth. We find this is a sequential and logical way to collect the information we need at that first appointment. The parts include esthetics, function, biology and structure.

Esthetics is the appearance of your teeth. This includes tooth shape and color, the position of your teeth, the position of your tissue. We will always ask you if you are happy with your smile. Sometimes, it is easier than you think to correct something you don’t like.

Function is basically looking at your bite. We look at how your teeth fit together, not only when you close together but also as you move your jaw. This part of the exam also includes a muscle and joint exam. If all of these things are not working in harmony, you may have excessive wear, cracks, muscle or joint pain, etc. Also, if your bite is not functioning properly, it can lead to breakdown of not only your teeth, but any dental work that you have in your mouth. The last part of this exam is a look at your airway, as a restricted airway can have consequences in your mouth.

Structure is the condition of your teeth. During this part of the exam we will be looking at current fillings, crowns, and bridges. We will look for missing teeth, decay, cracks, fractures, erosion and failing restorations.

Biology is the examination of your gums and bone. These are the supporting structures of your teeth. We will be looking for signs of inflammation, infection, bone loss, gum recession and abnormal findings on your x-rays. Our first priority is always obtaining healthy gums and bone. Without this, you compromise any dental work that is done in your mouth, and unhealthy gums affect the health of your entire body.

How do you know if this is the right exam for you?

Ask yourself if you want to do dentistry because you want what is best for you.

Do you want to do dentistry to help you look your best?

Do you want to do dentistry and ensure that it will last as long as possible?

Do you want a healthy mouth?

If you are dealing with significant dental issues, if you don’t like the way your teeth look, if your gums are bleeding, or if you are simply interested in the complete health of your mouth…..this is the exam for you!
